Museum Workshop

In the Hallie Ford Museum (# 53 on you Walking Map, entrance on State St.) we will have a short (15 - 20 minutes) tour of the four main galleries in the Museum, and then you will have the rest of the session to write. Students can choose a piece of the art on display to write about or tell a story about.

The traveling exhibit that is on display currently is by David Gilhooly and it consists of pieces sculpted and constructed out of plexiglass and plastic; many of the pieces are built out of preexisting plastic objects, some of which are toys and will be recognized by our writers. David's social commentary (the titles are a lark) may not interest some of our students, but I think they will find plenty to say about the objects themselves.

The other galleries include a collection of Native American baskets; a general collection of art including pieces from Europe, Pakistan, the Middle East, and Egypt; and an Oregon collection.

Please help students find a piece to which they would like to respond in writing or drawing. I would be delighted to have some written pieces of response to the museum and its collections. If you have a student who wants to share a piece with the museum, or if you see particularly interesting pieces of writing, please feel free to mark the selection with some of the post-it paper I will have available. If you can then give me the selected journals at the beginning of lunch (or at the end of the session for those who are in the Museum from 1:15 - 2:00) and I will quickly photocopy and return the journals to you.

Enjoy! Please remind students that the main rule of the Museum is that you should not touch the art works . Also, ONLY PENCILS MAY BE USED FOR WRITING IN THE MUSEUM!
